Brussilowskaya - Israeli SculptressA large nude on her back juggles with the egg which serves as her head. Valentina Brussilowskaya explains to me: "it is the mother- hen." Buffonery, idea, and style. These are three themes which reappear in the sculptures that the Israeli artist, originally from Russia, has recently exhibited at Galerie Pons-Debord: couples with feline-like heads, the balancers, the enormous overflowing seated, crouching and other more classic maternal studies of women. It is in the earth that Valentina has created them, either as utilitarian or as decorative objects. Round ceramic lumps; they know equally how to fuse the white tones with the metal tones or to clothe themselves in a sombre red. The sparkle of the glazed and baked material enhances the rendering of volumes but does not detract from the sense of observation, even caricature, poses seen with sympathy. Brussilowskaya, a name to be remembered.reviewed by Pascale Thuillant in La Cote des Art. Exhibited at Galerie Daniel Pons, 9 rue de I'Eperon,Paris, France. 2-20 June, 1992 |
